Getting help for panic attacks & anxiety disorder starts with your family physician. They can advise on whether the disorder is due to a medical condition or a true psychological condition. They may refer you to a mental health Professional, who are as follows:

Psychiatrists: Authorized to prescribe medications, these individuals can help correct chemical imbalances that may be causing the anxiety, if any. They can also help in prescribing anti-depressants and other medication to help you relax.

Psychologists: These Professionals cannot prescribe medicine, but they can administer many types of beneficial therapy to help you deal with the problem.

Social Workers & Counselors: Not as professionally trained as the above two, they can offer help by giving you practical solutions and advice.

Whenever looking for a healthcare professional, make sure to check their background, their level of experience and the overall satisfaction of their patients. This is very important. And, you should ask whether they have dealt with your particular situation before. After all, sessions with these professionals aren't cheap, and you want to get the biggest "bang for your buck".

Think of your doctor or therapist as your teammate, together, you can develop a strategy that you're comfortable with. There may be certain types of therapy that are not suited for you, and likewise, certain medications that aren't good for you. By communicating with your provider as much as possible, you increase the chances of successful treatment.

The National Institute of Mental Health is an organization that funds a lot of studies and is dedicated to finding new and better ways to treat mental disorders. Apart from seeking treatment from medical Professionals, you have the option of getting help from Employee Assistance Programs, if your employer has one. These programs will usually refer you to a counselor or therapist and most of the time it is free of charge for you. Seeking help from the EAP is also a confidential matter, the employer will not be informed of your visit.

There are also support groups setup by patients who want to help one another. Often times, many anxiety sufferers are not even aware of these groups, because they don't venture far from home. However, there should be a support group in your area, or if there isn't, why not create one! Thats right, having a like-minded group that you can share problems with, discuss strategies, and call on for help can be a huge confidence booster in dealing with panic attacks & anxiety disorders.
